Copa Beach Pavilion – a landmark for Vienna’s Donauinsel
design of a modular pavilion and roof, 2019 – ongoing
Facing the Donauinsel – Vienna’s popular recreational area on a 21km long artificial island built in the 1970’s – a newly created leisure area called Copa Beach is taking shape. Part of this will be a small, modular pavilion for a bike rental shop. Wooden lamellas are shading the interior from harsh sunlight, but can be slided sideways on gloomier days to let light and air in. Boxes attached to the facade provide informal seating for people to rest, contemplate or enjoy the view over the river. Both pavilion and roof are based on a simple modular system of elements that can be combined freely or used separately.
